Be Forward Wanderers cruised to the semifinals of the Airtel Top 8 Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kamuzu Barracks (KB) at Balaka Stadium Sunday.<\/p>\n
Joseph Kamwendo scored the lone goal of the second leg quarterfinal match from the spot to earn his team a place in the last four.<\/p>\n
This means Wanderers have progressed with a 2-0 aggregate score after Kamwendo also scored in the first leg match under similar circumstances.<\/p>\n
The veteran midfielder is now the leading scorer in the competition with two goals.<\/p>\n
Going into the game with a 1-0 advantage, the Nomads seemed contented as they sat back and played second fiddle to the soldiers for the better part of the first half.<\/p>\n
KB\u2019s Manase Chiyesa scored 18 minutes into the first half but the goal was ruled out for offside. Both teams failed to play a passing game with the disjointed Wanderers being a shadow of themselves.<\/p>\n
However, the soldiers failed to make the most of their chances despite winning the battle in midfield.<\/p>\n
In the final half, KB pressed hard for a goal but the Nomads kept frustrating them.<\/p>\n
Wanderers finally got a lifeline in the 27th minute when a KB defender handled the ball in the danger zone under pressure.<\/p>\n
Kamwendo stepped up and converted the resultant spotkick to seal a semifinal slot for the Lali Lubani Road side.<\/p>\n
Wanderers Coach, Yasin Osman, said the game was difficult and congratulated his charges for the win.<\/p>\n
\u201cKamuzu Barracks came in strongly. We knew that it would be a physical game. But our players tried their best until we got the penalty,\u201d Osman said.<\/p>\n
But KB Team Manager, Kazizwa Banda, described Wanderers\u2019 penalty as dubious.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe played well but when your opponents score from a dubious penalty kick, it demoralises you. But I congratulate them for going through,\u201d Banda said.<\/p>\n
