{"id":65353,"date":"2018-05-17T10:56:19","date_gmt":"2018-05-17T08:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=65353"},"modified":"2018-05-17T10:56:20","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T08:56:20","slug":"old-mutual-investment-group-rescues-college-of-medicine-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/05\/17\/old-mutual-investment-group-rescues-college-of-medicine-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Mutual Investment Group rescues College of Medicine students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Old Mutual Investment Group (Omig), a subsidiary of Old Mutual Malawi Group, on Wednesday rescued nine needy College of Medicine (CoM) students when it offered them scholarships worth K2.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Omig Head of Portfolio Investment, Mphatso Kasalika, said his firm decided to help the students after receiving an appeal for help from the college.<\/p>\n<p>Kasalika said Omig is committed to improving the welfare of communities in which it operates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe education is the backbone of any economy. That is why we decided to contribute towards the development of education in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also believe that, through this contribution, we are also helping in improving the country\u2019s health sector,\u201d Kasalika said.<\/p>\n<p>CoM Principal, Mwapasa Mipando, hailed Omig for the support.<\/p>\n<p>Mipando said the college has a number of students who are struggling to meet their tuition a well as accommodation needs.<\/p>\n<p>He said, though the Higher Education Students\u2019 Loans and Grants Board, gives assistance to needy students, most of them do struggle as they only get partial scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will find that, at times, they may only get loans to cover their tuition and they have to find their own accommodation.
