{"id":65340,"date":"2018-05-17T09:53:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-17T07:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=65340"},"modified":"2018-05-17T09:53:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T07:53:59","slug":"mec-boss-calls-for-impartiality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/05\/17\/mec-boss-calls-for-impartiality\/","title":{"rendered":"Mec boss calls for impartiality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has asked district commissioners (DCs), chief executive officers of local councils and the Malawi Police Service to be impartial when dealing with issues related to May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.<\/p>\n<p>Mec Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah, made the call on Tuesday when the electoral body engaged DCs, council CEOs, district police officers in-charge and other election managers in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to remind you to exercise utmost impartiality as you discharge your duties. Treat all contestants equally and always act within the laws of this country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first meeting of its kind to be held between the commission and all DCs, police officers-in-charge and district education managers in preparation for the elections.<\/p>\n<p>Ansah said, although all the elections held in the past were declared free and fair by observers, Mec is always searching for opportunities that would help it deliver better results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Malawi Electoral Commission has managed six national elections; five parliamentary and presidential elections and one Local Government election. Although all these elections went fairly smoothly, and were all declared free and fair by observers, these achievements have not lulled us into a sense of complacency,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ansah said she understands that an election is a serious contestation for political power and the 2019 elections have even higher magnitude of political interest than ever before and everyone is looking up to the commission to deliver on its mandate.<\/p>\n<p>She said Mec has a huge responsibility to put in place and implement election management processes that will produce an outcome that will be accepted by all without fear, favour and prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe elections ahead of us have a high magnitude of responsibility and political interest, maybe more than any of those we have had before.
