Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, has said there is need to fast-track introduction of the government\u2019s welfare fund.<\/p>\n
The fund is aimed at assisting former sports personalities that represented Malawi in national and international competitions.<\/p>\n
Kasaila made the remarks on the sidelines of a funeral ceremony for the late Jack \u2018Africa\u2019 Chamangwana, a legendary defender for the national football team, in Blantyre on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI need to check with the Sports Council on the progress [on introduction] of the fund. This issue was raised in September last year, and we should now be able to finalise [work on] the fund which will help us in sports development and welfare issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is a government mechanism which analyses who should be honoured and, as a sector, we need to advance our goals to the responsible committee which decides who should be honoured. We will be submitting names of sports personalities to this committee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Former Flames coach, Kinnah Phiri, who played and coached with the late Chamangwana in the national team, said it was a pity that his late colleague was not supported when he was alive.<\/p>\n
