{"id":6466,"date":"2015-07-24T08:24:03","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T08:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=6466"},"modified":"2015-07-24T08:24:03","modified_gmt":"2015-07-24T08:24:03","slug":"podcam-urges-for-nurturing-of-skills-in-children-with-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/07\/24\/podcam-urges-for-nurturing-of-skills-in-children-with-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcam urges for nurturing of skills in children with disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (Podcam) has urged parents and guardians to recognise and nurture special abilities in children with disabilities in order to help them depend on such talents for their livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>Padcam Executive Director Mirriam Namanja assured a gathering at Ndenguma Village, Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje on Wednesday that children with disabilities have special talents just as any other child, hence the need to nurture their skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is that many parents or other guardians for children with disabilities hide their kids and sometimes even keep them in isolated places, thereby abusing their human rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, the parents are supposed to be open because other people can also help them in identifying special talents in their children which could be nurtured,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Namanja was speaking after Podcam donated a wheelchair, capital for business and various items to the family of Pearson Chikoti who have a six-year-old child with a disability, Blessings.<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director said the organisation approached various institutions to find help for the family after being touched by the account from Blessings\u2019 mother on radio.<\/p>\n<p>Said Namanja: \u201cThrough various well-wishers, the organisation sourced a wheelchair worth K70, 000 to ease mobility problems for Blessings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the wheelchair, Podcam also gave the Chikoti family other items such as cloths, beddings, soap donated by Candlex and soya flour, in addition to a K10, 000-business capital.<\/p>\n<p>Blessings\u2019 mother, Agnes Chikoti, commended Padcam for the donation, especially the wheelchair, saying the equipment would help Blessings move easily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been experiencing a lot of problems taking our child to and from school where he is in Standard One,\u201d Chikoti said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut with the help of this wheelchair, Blessings will now be able to move easily and interact with his friends. And I also believe the donation will help him realise his dream of becoming a medical doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Village Head Ndenguma encouraged the Chikoti family to identify their child\u2019s abilities that could be nurtured for his livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am calling upon all people in Nsanje taking care of people with disabilities to stop isolating these children and make sure that their talents are strengthened for their good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (Podcam) has urged parents and guardians to recognise and nurture special abilities in children with disabilities in order to help them depend on such talents for their livelihood.
