The National Registration Bureau (NRB) has donated biometric kits to the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) which will help save an estimated K1.8 billion that the commission had budgeted for.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Mary Nkosi made the revelation in Mzuzu on Saturday when Mec held a demonstration of biometric voter registration<\/p>\n
During the meeting which drew electoral stakeholders including officials of political parties and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Nkosi said the commission has received a total of 1,499 biometric kits from the National Registration Bureau (NRB).<\/p>\n
According to the commissioner, the biometric kits will assist her commission to save a total of K1.8 billion which initially Mec budgeted for the purchase of some equipment for the voters\u2019 registration exercise.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had budgeted to buy kits for the registration process which would cost us about K1.8 billion but National Registration Bureau has given us,\u201d Nkosi said.<\/p>\n
She said the new system is more reliable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is more reliable, you are extracting information which is in NRB data base where people registered for national identification cards, we will be just extracting that information and put it on a voters\u2019 registration card,\u201d Nkosi said.<\/p>\n
She further asked those who are above eighteen years and have not registered with NRB to do so and then assured people that during the voter\u2019s registration exercise Mec will be accompanied by NRB for people to be registered.<\/p>\n
The new voters\u2019 electronic system allows 20 people to be registered in five minutes.<\/p>\n
According to Mec\u2019s electoral calendar, voters\u2019 registration exercise will commence on May 25, 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
