The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Tuesday explained to the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament why it returned K29 million to sacked Agriculture minister George Chaponda.<\/p>\n
On April 9 2018, the magistrate\u2019s court sitting in Zomba ordered the ACB to return the money it confiscated at Chaponda\u2019s house in Lilongwe\u2019s Area 10 last year.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, ACB Director General, Reyneck Matemba, also updated the committee that, according to his investigations, no cabinet member was involved in the 13 files of the suspected K236 billion Cashgate.<\/p>\n
Chaponda, who is a member of the committee, was asked to move out of the meeting room before the discussion on the matter started.<\/p>\n
The committee\u2019s Chairperson, Maxwell Thyolera, said the committee feels it is important for the committee to know the reasons behind the move which raised questions among Malawians.<\/p>\n
\u201cACB clarified that the K29 million that was given back was not part of the K95 million which was money for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and that the K29 million was not part of that count,\u201d Thyolera said.<\/p>\n
After a session with the lawmakers, Matemba said he was happy that the MPs understood why the decision was made.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe case involves a senior public figure and the decision to give back K29 million out of the K124 million that we seized from Honourable Chaponda\u2019s house was made. I took this opportunity to explain to the committee and I am happy that they have understood.
