Scores of pupils from Chankhanga Primary School in Kasungu yesterday took to the streets smashing windows and cars at Kasungu Municipal Council offices.<\/p>\n
Police and district officials confirmed that the children were protesting against sale of their school playground to business people.<\/p>\n
The incident happened in the morning soon after their school assembly. In large numbers, they trekked to the municipality offices and hell broke loose.<\/p>\n
Kasungu Police spokesperson, Edna Mzingwitsa, said police were alerted about the commotion after the property had already been destroyed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they were moving towards the Dem\u2019s [District Education Manager\u2019s] office, we just thought they were going to attend an event there but after sometime we received a call from the municipal council that the children were pelting stones.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe went there and the children dispersed and went back to their school but so far we haven\u2019t arrested anybody and we are investigating,\u201d Mzingwitsa said.<\/p>\n
Director of Administration at Kasungu Municipal Council, Elizabeth Banda, said she was not around when the incident happened and just got information about the riot from other people.<\/p>\n
Sources said tension had been simmering for some time. Councillors, school authorities and representatives of parents have been asking for alternative land but the council has failed to do so despite placing beacons on the playground.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
