Catholic Bishops want justice and the rule of law to prevail in the abduction and murder of MacDonald Masambuka, a 22-year-old man with albinism, following the arrest of one of their of own, Fr Thomas Muhosha of Zomba Diocese.<\/p>\n
The bishops, speaking as the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), released a statement Sunday after an emergency meeting they held in Lilongwe on the arrest of the Zomba priest.<\/p>\n
ECM said it is shocked and disturbed that one of their own, Muhosha, allegedly took part in the murder of Masambuka.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust like the Bishop of Zomba, we all are shocked, dismayed and disturbed with these horrendous allegations. As Catholic Bishops in Malawi, we express our deepest sympathy to the family and relatives of McDonald Masambuka and all relatives of victims of [cases of] similar nature,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n
The statement also says Catholic bishops in Malawi express their deepest sympathy to the family and relatives of Masambuka and, in solidarity with the Bishop of Zomba Diocese, ECM condemns the murder calling it a barbaric act.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Catholic Church defends the sanctity of life at any point of a person\u2019s life and the killing of albinos is a direct violation of the sanctity of life. To our brothers and sisters living with albinism, we assure you that we continue to support, defend and see to it that you are protected by all means,\u201d reads the statement in part.<\/p>\n
