Members of the Mzuzu vendors committee who took to the streets last week in protest against the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Friday turned down an invitation by DPP regional leadership.<\/p>\n
The vendors last week petitioned the DPP leadership in the district to stop backing illegal vending. They blamed DPP governor Kenneth Sanga and Member of Parliament for the city Leonard Njikho for promoting vending in undesignated markets.<\/p>\n
Sanga and Njikho invited the vendors to respond to the petition.<\/p>\n
\u201cI sent the invitation to the committee through their president; unfortunately, they did not show up. On our part, we do not have problems because we wanted to respond to their petition because they gave us seven days to do so,\u201d Sanga said in an interview.<\/p>\n
Sanga said the DPP is against vendors selling their goods in prohibited places.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut chasing these vendors without identifying a proper place for business is what we are against,\u201d Sanga said.<\/p>\n
Sanga\u2019s sentiments were echoed by Njikho, who said the matter should be resolved soberly.<\/p>\n
President of all the vendors in Mzuzu, James Kasambala, who attended the meeting, refused to comment when asked for a comment on what the DPP officials had said.<\/p>\n
But speaking in a separate interview, secretary for the vendors committee, Frank Hara, said their committee did not attend the meeting because some of the invited vendors support the DPP.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow could they ask all vendors, including those who were against our demonstrations, to the meeting? We say they have not responded to us and we will take our next course of action as we promised,\u201d Hara said.<\/p>\n
At the meeting, Sanga then gave the vendors K1.6 million and party materials, claiming that some vendors had asked him to do so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
