Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) champions, Bravehearts Men\u2019s Basketball Club, endured a disappointing trip to South Africa after losing three games in Johannesburg Invitational Tournament held from Friday to Sunday at Kliprivierberg Recreations Centre.<\/p>\n
The Malawian team started the tournament with 50-42 loss to VUT on Friday before another 58-49 defeat to MBB.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, Bravehearts lost 44-39 to Rhinos before going down again to 60-33 to Rebels on the same day.<\/p>\n
But Head Coach and Patron, Griffin Kalua, said the teams learnt a lot during the games, as they prepare for the Swaziland Tournament slated for June.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe teams in South Africa are experienced, exposed and technically sound. We needed such a competition for us to gauge our strength. Our weaknesses were exposed and we know exactly where we need to work on. But in terms of basketball, we are not far from them,\u201d Kalua said.<\/p>\n
Despite losing more games, Bravehearts\u2019 Tinotenda Nhira won the African Bank Half Court Challenge to pocket R5,000 (about K300, 000).<\/p>\n
Bravehearts Ladies exited the tournament from the semi-final stage when they lost 54-52 to Phoenix Ladies.<\/p>\n
On their way to the semi-finals, Bravehearts Ladies beat VUT 50- 42, before defeating their Lilongwe counterparts Cougars 51-10, then losing 39-37 to Phoenix Flames.<\/p>\n
Head Coach for Bravehearts Women\u2019s, Lusungu Banda, admitted that it was a tough tournament.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been working on coordination after we lost most of the players who are also netballers. We met teams that were technically sound and we are happy that we got lessons to apply when we travel to Swaziland in June,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
