Malawi Economic Justice Network (Mejn) has said active public engagement on issues affecting the country is one of the ways of blocking fraud and corruption attempts by selfish and greedy leaders.<\/p>\n
Mejn Executive Director, Dalitso Kubalasa, said Malawians should know that politicians and people in leadership positions would really like an environment where nobody asks them questions on governance.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa said the citizens who are engaged in governance issues are empowered, ask questions naturally without having to wait for somebody and understand that governance is an issue of collective responsibility.<\/p>\n
He said questions coming from some of the organisations that support Malawi such as the European Union (EU) are a sign of frustrations that, despite pumping in huge sums of money, the country remains poor on governance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe more citizen engagements we have, the better we do in accountability. The more citizen engagements we have, the stronger social accountability system we have, the better the results we should be seeing. So, it is about breaking down the smallest and easiest things when we are talking about the basics of decentralisation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
As part of strengthening citizen participation in issues of governance, Mejn has been implementing the Improved Local Governance and Community Action in Malawi Project with financial and technical assistance from the EU through Trocaire.<\/p>\n
Some of the districts that have benefited from the project, which is ending this year, are Dowa, Mulanje and Zomba.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
