{"id":6348,"date":"2015-07-23T06:46:29","date_gmt":"2015-07-23T06:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=6348"},"modified":"2015-07-23T06:46:29","modified_gmt":"2015-07-23T06:46:29","slug":"kenya-to-close-airspace-for-barack-obamas-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/07\/23\/kenya-to-close-airspace-for-barack-obamas-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya to close airspace for Barack Obama&#8217;s visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kenya will close its airspace for a 50-minute window ahead of US President Barack Obama&#8217;s arrival in the capital Nairobi on Friday, the country&#8217;s civil aviation authority (KCAA) says.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A ban on planes flying lower than 20,000 feet will remain in place in Nairobi for the duration of Mr Obama&#8217;s three-day visit, it says.<\/p>\n<p>Some US media\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2015\/07\/22\/security-breach-kenyan-airline-official-leaks-obama-exact-itinerary\/\"><strong>have criticised<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the KCAA for revealing Mr Obama&#8217;s travel plans.<\/p>\n<p>The US issued a travel warning for Kenya in July ahead of the visit.<\/p>\n<p>The global entrepreneurship summit in Nairobi this weekend, which Mr Obama is due to address, could provide &#8220;a target for terrorists&#8221;, the US State Department said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyans are preparing for significant disruption after police announced major road closures in Nairobi from Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyan airspace will also be closed for a further 40 minutes on Sunday when President Obama leaves for neighbouring Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>Somali Islamist group al-Shabab has staged repeated attacks on Kenya in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>In April, it killed 148 people at a university in the north and in 2013, at least 67 people died when the al-Qaeda-linked group attacked Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the UK lifted its warning against travelling to part of Kenya&#8217;s coast, including Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya will close its airspace for a 50-minute window ahead of US President Barack Obama&#8217;s arrival in the capital Nairobi on Friday, the country&#8217;s civil aviation authority (KCAA) says.
