{"id":63289,"date":"2018-04-02T07:30:38","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T05:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=63289"},"modified":"2018-04-02T07:30:39","modified_gmt":"2018-04-02T05:30:39","slug":"children-with-hearing-problems-get-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/04\/02\/children-with-hearing-problems-get-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Children with hearing problems get help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A combination of poor referral services and the lack of specialist doctors are affecting the ability of children with different impairments to learn in rural areas, a senior Malawi Red Cross Society official said over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Mangochi District Red Cross Assistant Projects Officer, Chisomo Banda, said in an interview when her organisation rolled out an outreach programme with specialist doctors from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Banda said the outreach was necessitated by an increase of school going children who are failing to go to school due to various impairments that require specialist treatment.<\/p>\n<p>With an estimated population of about 1.2 million people, Mangochi is struggling to provide quality health services.<\/p>\n<p>This, according to Red Cross, has led to children living with conditions which could, otherwise, have been treated.<\/p>\n<p>Banda cited visual and hearing impairments as some of the most common conditions among children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith support from Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Netherlands, Red Cross is implementing several community resilient projects that are aimed at capacitating rural communities to withstand natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the resilient projects, we want to work towards improving access to health services for children with various impairments,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A combination of poor referral services and the lack of specialist doctors are affecting the ability of children with different impairments to learn in rural areas, a senior Malawi Red Cross Society official said over the weekend.
