The month of March is a season for women and Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe takes time to give attention to performances by women but also acts that tell stories about women.<\/p>\n
Madsoc Theatre\u2019s coordinator, Hazel Mambo, said they have March for Women in place which she indicated is an important initiative by Mwezi Arts and all artists involved to celebrate mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters, wives and grandmothers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not donor driven but a platform truly set for women to tell their own stories,\u201d Mambo said.<\/p>\n
So many activities have happened at the venue this month and tomorrow it is the premiere of a movie titled Nyasaland <\/em>by award winning actress and filmmaker Joyce Mhango Chavula.<\/p>\n Mhango Chavula, who released the film\u2019s trailer on YouTube recently, said she has taken advantage of Madsoc Theatre\u2019s celebration of women to premiere the movie.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity for people in Lilongwe to see the film and then from there we will move to other places. It\u2019s good to launch the film in March because it\u2019s a month we celebrate women,\u201d Mhango Chavula said.<\/p>\n The Film Association of Malawi (Fama) vice president said she was looking forward to getting feedback from the people.<\/p>\n \u201cI have nothing much to say rather than inviting people to the premiere. I am set to begin this journey with \u2018Nyasaland\u2019. Let people come and enjoy the film,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n In the film, which is Mhango Chavula\u2019s third movie, a woman upon her return to the village to see her sick father is shocked to find him dead and buried.<\/p>\n What follows is her encounter with the hyena that is terrorising the village and it happens to be a human being.<\/p>\n With the help of a young man, she takes the hyena head on and saves her village.<\/p>\n Mhango Chavula made history for Malawi in 2016 when her film Lilongwe <\/em>triumphed in the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs).<\/p>\n She was the first to win an award in the AMVCAs for Malawi and the first to notch the Best Movie \u2013Southern Africa Award which was introduced in 2016.<\/p>\n Lilongwe <\/em>also triumphed in the inaugural Malawi Film Festival awards organised by M-Theatre now The Underground last year where Mhango Chavula also got the Best Director award.<\/p>\n Mhango Chavula also received a nomination in the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in 2014 for Best Feature Film by Director for her movie No More Tears <\/em>but she failed to win the award.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The month of March is a season for women and Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe takes time to give attention to performances by women but also acts that tell stories about women.
