{"id":62757,"date":"2018-03-23T10:31:25","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T08:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=62757"},"modified":"2018-03-23T10:31:26","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T08:31:26","slug":"mixed-fortunes-for-malawi-swimmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/03\/23\/mixed-fortunes-for-malawi-swimmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Mixed fortunes for Malawi swimmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local swimmers endured mixed fortunes on Wednesday when Zone 1V Championship got underway at African Bible College in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi\u2019s swimmer Fillipe Gomez won silver medal in the men\u2019s category whereas Ammara Pinto settled for fourth position in the women\u2019s category.<\/p>\n<p>Maya Mofield finished on position four whereas Mwandeyi Kumwenda came out on position five.<\/p>\n<p>Tayamika Chang\u2019anamuno finished on position seven. Some local swimmers finished on double digits\u2019 position.<\/p>\n<p>The swimmers are taking part in several heats at the event, which has attracted over 200 athletes from 13 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbours, Zambia, started the tournament on a high, having won gold medals during the competition.<\/p>\n<p>As of yesterday, Zambia led with 509 points, followed by Zimbabwe and Mauritius on second and third positions with 296 and 293 points, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa was on position four with 275 points whereas Malawi was on fifth place with 220 points.<\/p>\n<p>Botswana and Kenya took positions six and seven with 175 and 149 points, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Madagascar started the competition on a low, having been at bottom with 54 points, followed by Swaziland on 72 points.<\/p>\n<p>However, the positions were expected to change by yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Aquatic Union Vice-President, Monica Chang\u2019anamuno, said the local swimmers have started the competition on a promising note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have started on a good note because some swimmers have finished on single digits\u2019 positions. I think at the end of the competition, we will win some medals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, said it was an honour for Malawi to host the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue supporting all sports codes to ensure that we do well in international competitions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lilongwe City Mayor, Desmond Bikoko and other high profile officials graced the opening of the competition on Wednesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Local swimmers endured mixed fortunes on Wednesday when Zone 1V Championship got underway at African Bible College in Lilongwe.
