Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) and Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) have said the onus is on their athletes to perform beyond stakeholders\u2019 expectations at next month\u2019s Commonwealth Games after being picked to represent the country.<\/p>\n
This follows a hearty send-off which the two sport codes were accorded ahead of the games that will attract more than 6,600 athletes and officials from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories.<\/p>\n
Team Malawi consists of two sport codes\u2014netball and athletics\u2014after others missed the campaign due to their failure to qualify for the Games that are held every four years.<\/p>\n
Nam President, Khungekile Matiya, said they have been accorded a hearty send-off and there was need to repay the nation by impressing at the Games.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that a lot is expected from us and we will try our best not to disappoint,\u201d Matiya said.<\/p>\n
AAM President, Godfrey Phiri, dangled a carrot for the athletes, saying the association would give K500,000 to any medal-winning runner<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are doing this to inspire our athletes. Being one of the two sport codes representing the country calls for us to perform in line with expectations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Team Malawi was unveiled at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre on Friday before the Australian Embassy treated athletes and officials to a cocktail.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe organised this cocktail to promote the forthcoming Games as well as wish Team Malawi all the best before the event starts,\u201d the embassy\u2019s Second Secretary, Ananya Srivastava, said.<\/p>\n
Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, graced the occasion alongside Principal Secretary, Joseph Mwandidya, Director of Sports Jameson Ndalama, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Board Chairman, James Chuma, MNCS Executive Secretary George Jana and Malawi Olympic Committee President, Oscar Kanjala.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
