{"id":62406,"date":"2018-03-16T11:53:44","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T09:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=62406"},"modified":"2018-03-16T11:53:45","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T09:53:45","slug":"peter-mutharika-warns-contractors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/03\/16\/peter-mutharika-warns-contractors\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Mutharika warns contractors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>P<\/strong>resident Peter Mutharika Thursday launched the National Transport Master Plan with a warning that he will ban all contractors who delay projects, do substandard works or overprice, from undertaking government projects.<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika said his government is determined to improve the transport sector in the country by spurring projects in air, marine, urban transportation and rail subsectors.<\/p>\n<p>He said as government will be implementing the master plan pegged at $9.1 billion (approximately K6.67 trillion at current exchange rates), both local and international contractors who engage in fraudulent acts will be banished from working with the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere shall be no shoddy and substandard work and no unnecessary delays and overpricing. You do that, we will go after you and you will never do work in this country again. I am warning you for the last time, stop stealing from this country,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n<p>He further hit at those accusing him of laying too many foundation stones, saying, for every foundation stone he has laid, there is construction taking place.<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika said the <em>sizitheka <\/em>(it will not be possible) syndrome is bringing the country down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly for once, let us work together. Let us be serious about developing this country. Let us get out of our negativity, negativism and negative mentality\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe empty noise that some are making that we are doing more groundbreaking than actual construction is completely false and nonsense. We are doing construction of more roads than ever before,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry President, Karl Chokotho, commenting on the launch, said that the plan needs to have some of its projects reviewed before implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, what we want is an increase in efficiency and reduction of logistics costs so that we don\u2019t end up with projects that will not bring the efficiency and bring down the costs.
