{"id":62332,"date":"2018-03-15T10:58:04","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T08:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=62332"},"modified":"2018-03-15T10:58:05","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T08:58:05","slug":"malawi-to-launch-transport-master-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/03\/15\/malawi-to-launch-transport-master-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi to launch transport master plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government will Thursday launch a National Transport Master Plan (NTMP) which seeks to transform the country\u2019s transport sector in the next 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Transport and Public Works Minister, Jappie Mhango, made the announcement at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>He said the master plan would provide a framework for delivering sustainable interventions towards improving the transport sector across Malawi for a period of 20 years from 2017 to 2037.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan defines infrastructure proposals across multi-modal transport network which covers road, rail way, inland water, civil aviation, rural and urban transport,\u201d Mhango said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the plan would require about $9.15 billion from the World Bank over a period of 20 years and has identified a number of interventions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also plans to extend the railway network into Malawi from ports other than Nacala [in Mozambique] in order to offer choice and increased competition,\u201d Mhango said.<\/p>\n<p>Through the plan, the government would also introduce mass transportation to reduce congestion by constructing an express way between Limbe and Blantyre above Chipembere Highway and increase bypass roads in cities around central business areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our expectation that, at the end of the 20- year period, generations to come will reflect on this massive transformation in the transport sector,\u201d Mhango said<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government will Thursday launch a National Transport Master Plan (NTMP) which seeks to transform the country\u2019s transport sector in the next 20 years.
