Anti-corruption and rights body, Corruption and Rights Watch (Corwa), has asked Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Goodall Gondwe, to explain where the K4 billion that Members of Parliament agreed to share was found lying idle.<\/p>\n
In a statement that its Executive Director, Eliah Kamphinda, has signed, Cowra says it is concerned about the manner Gondwe has been responding to the media on the issue and the body feels the minister has not only been inconsistent but rude to Malawians.<\/p>\n
Corwa has asked the Finance Minister to stop intimidating media practitioners every time they ask him to explain to Malawians about the money.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere exactly is this somewhere? We respect Mr Gondwe as a seasoned economist and a Finance Minister, for more than 10 years, who cannot fail to explain where exactly this money was lying idle,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n
Kamphinda says Corwa believes that Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has a clue on the source of the money in question as Gondwe told Parliament that upon \u201cdiscovering\u201d the money, Nankhumwa was notified.<\/p>\n
\u201cCorwa would like to condemn the two ministers for [leading an] archaic life by not [telling] the nation the truth about this money,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n
The statement says the body is closely watching what is happening and believes that the government will not be surprised to see civil society organisations organising mass demonstrations to force it to come back to its senses.<\/p>\n
As many individuals and organisations have done before, the organisation has also called for the resignation of both Gondwe and Nankhumwa and the Anti- Corruption Bureau to investigate the matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
