{"id":61896,"date":"2018-03-08T09:19:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T07:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=61896"},"modified":"2018-03-08T09:19:41","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T07:19:41","slug":"un-bemoans-gap-in-gender-equality-initiatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/03\/08\/un-bemoans-gap-in-gender-equality-initiatives\/","title":{"rendered":"UN bemoans gap in gender equality initiatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>United Nations (UN) Women has said there is need to join hands for women empowerment goals to be met.<\/p>\n<p>UN Women Representative, Clara Anyangwe, made the remarks in Lilongwe during a media interface aimed at reminding Malawians about the importance of commemorating Women\u2019s Day, which this year is being held under the theme \u2018Time Is Now, Call on Rural and Urban Activists in Transforming Women Lives\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>She said it is sad to note that respect for women\u2019s rights is far from becoming a reality in most African countries, including Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen ought to be taught and sensitised to the importance of their rights so that they should know when they [rights] are being violated and infringed on. They [women] should also know who to report to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Gender, children, Disability and Social Welfare, Jean Kalilani, said it is high time people started treating women as equals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Women\u2019s Day, we celebrate the contributions that women make towards the development of their families, their communities as well as the country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, gender activist Emma Kaliya has asked Malawians to fight for the rights of women on the issue of land ownership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are not allowed to own land in the country which is unfair and should be looked into as we push for a more equal world and society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>United Nations (UN) Women has said there is need to join hands for women empowerment goals to be met.
