{"id":6081,"date":"2015-07-16T09:27:16","date_gmt":"2015-07-16T09:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=6081"},"modified":"2015-07-16T09:27:16","modified_gmt":"2015-07-16T09:27:16","slug":"first-lady-decries-poor-infrastructure-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/07\/16\/first-lady-decries-poor-infrastructure-in-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"First Lady decries poor infrastructure in schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First Lady Gertrude Mutharika has decried lack of proper infrastructure in the country\u2019s schools which contributes to poor teaching and learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika has since called on government and other organisations to join hands to address the problem.<\/p>\n<p>She said this on Wednesday when Plan International donated two school blocks and a teacher\u2019s house to Baula Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Mutharika presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for a girls\u2019 hostel to be constructed by Plan International Malawi in partnership with Beautify Malawi Trust (Beam) at Emvuyeni Community Day Secondary School under the Beam Trust Girls\u2019 Initiative which was launched last month at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will agree with me that lack of proper school infrastructure is one of the widespread challenges that the education sector faces in the country. For instance, if one can visit schools across the country, he will be able to appreciate the need for classrooms both in primary schools and community day secondary schools,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika added: \u201cIn most of the schools, there is a visible need for more classrooms and teacher\u2019s houses. These challenges call for concerted efforts from the government and other nongovernmental organisations if the status quo of our education standards is to be improved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is need for organisations to team up and support the government in addressing the existing challenges in the education sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She further said lack of the boarding facilities at At Emvuyeni and many other schools was forcing girls into self boarding.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ministry of Educationacting spokesperson Manfred Ndovi government does not condone self boarding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project also marks another milestone in Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust\u2019s quest to provide a conducive environment for girls to excel in education in Malawi. It has emphasised Beam Trust\u2019s vision of beauty by considering educating girls as an important ingredient for beautifying Malawi,\u201d said Mutharika.<\/p>\n<p>Plan Malawi Country Director Lilly Omondi said her organisation was happy to work with Beam Trust in the provision of conducive learning environment for pupils in Malawi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First Lady Gertrude Mutharika has decried lack of proper infrastructure in the country\u2019s schools which contributes to poor teaching and learning environment.
