{"id":60187,"date":"2018-02-05T11:03:20","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T09:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=60187"},"modified":"2018-02-05T11:03:21","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T09:03:21","slug":"youngsters-impress-in-s-and-s-chess-tourney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/02\/05\/youngsters-impress-in-s-and-s-chess-tourney\/","title":{"rendered":"Youngsters impress in S and S chess tourney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first edition of the S and S Geniuses Schools Chess tournament has left an indelible mark on the game as some players emerged champions with a perfect record during the finals at St Andrew\u2019s International High School in Blantyre on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In the senior category, Chisomo Sumani of James Chiona Secondary School won all games to emerge champion in the senior boys\u2019 category.<\/p>\n<p>Sumani collected six points to outclass 39 other competitors while his schoolmate, Quincy Mukhwapa, finished second.<\/p>\n<p>Tafadzwa Linje ended on third position. The last two collected 4.5 points apiece but were separated using the Buchholz tie breaking system.<\/p>\n<p>In the senior ladies category, Tamara Mdala also amassed maximum points.<\/p>\n<p>Tinashe Jumbe of Kalibu Academy finished second with 4.5 points while Faith Gondwe of Joyce Banda Foundation settled for bronze with four points.<\/p>\n<p>Zaithwa Mwale of Blantyre Baptist Academy claimed the honours in the junior men\u2019s category while Daisy Huwa from Alipo Primary School emerged champion in the junior girls\u2019 section.<\/p>\n<p>Former national ladies champion, Susan Namangale, who is also the former Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) chairperson, jointly bankrolled the K300,000 competition with well-known chess personality Stanley Kenani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be back bigger and better next year. But before that, we will hold a similar event in the Northern Region in April this year. We need to invest in the youth to reap the rewards in future,\u201d Namangale said.<\/p>\n<p>SRCL Chairperson, Wasoka Chirwa, hailed Namangale and Kenani for supporting the tournament, which saw youngsters displaying fantastic moves on the board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sponsors have also shown interest in continuing to support junior chess. We need this to develop as a nation.
