Some traditional authorities (T\/As) from Machinga and Mangochi districts as well as the police investigating the shooting of Paramount Chief Kawinga have expressed suspicion that the shooting was an attempt to assassinate the traditional leader other than robbery.<\/p>\n
Kawinga was shot at twice Monday night.<\/p>\n
The chiefs have since asked the government to consider providing security to senior traditional leaders in the country to avoid similar incidences.<\/p>\n
T\/A Chowe of Mangochi said their preliminary analysis has shown that the people who shot at their paramount chief were not robbers but had lethal intentions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they were mere robbers, they could not have damaged his vehicle as well as demanding to know where the Paramount Chief was hiding. We are surprised that the people were demanding money apart from demanding to know the whereabouts of the chief. This is not the type of armed robbery we know,\u201d Chowe said.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that when they did not find Kawinga at his place, the robbers are said to have followed him to his other house and Chowe said if the people had intentions of robbing Kawinga\u2019s property, there was no way they could have followed him.<\/p>\n
Senior Chief Liwonde said people in the district are demanding thorough investigations into the matter.<\/p>\n
Some police officers who are investigating the matter also said there are pointers that the shooting was an attempt on Kawinga\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
Kawinga and another victim are admitted to Zomba Hospital where they are receiving treatment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
