Members of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) in Malawi have urged Blantyre-based professionals and institutions to take a leading role in planting trees in the Mudi Dam Catchment Area in a bid to rehabilitate and preserve the dam.
\nIIA recently teamed up with Blantyre Water Board (BWB) in a tree planting exercise that took place over the weekend as one way of conserving the area, which is instrumental in water production.
\nIIA President, Thokozile Kuwali, said Mudi Dam remains an important site in the provision of water to companies and residents of Blantyre.
\n\u201cThe area needs more trees and our being here is meant to help the board in bringing back the lost vegetative cover,\u201d he said
\nKuwali said, during the event, close to 3,000 trees were planted.
\n\u201cAs auditors, we are also concerned with the way the area was encroached. This brought water production challenges and, so, planting trees is of great benefit,\u201d Kuwali said.
\nIn his remarks, BWB Director of Technical Services, Mavuto Chiipanthenga, hailed the move by the auditors, saying such an initiative needs collective efforts.
\nHe added that BWB has set aside K70 million to go towards similar initiatives.
\n\u201cWe appreciate IIA for joining hands with us to plant trees. This will help us bring back the lost glory,\u201d he said.
