Malawi Police Service (MPS) operatives on Saturday arrested a colleague who was guarding the residence of Minister of Civic Education and Culture, Grace Chiumia, in Lilongwe after it was discovered that he was drunk.
\nConstable Ronnex Njema, of Police Mobile Service (PMS) C-Division, was on duty during the day but was replaced in the afternoon when it was discovered that he was drunk.
\nNational Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, said Njema would be summoned to a disciplinary hearing.
\n\u201cConstable Njema was assigned to provide guard services during day time at the minister\u2019s residence. He was arrested for being found drunk and incapable [of performing duties]. It is believed that he was consuming the liquor whilst on duty. He was immediately replaced and disciplinary proceedings will follow,\u201d Kadadzera said.
\nHe has since appealed to the general public to report to relevant authorities once they see police officers getting involved in misconduct while on duty.
\n\u201cPolice officers are supposed to work with alertness, with vigilance and are not supposed to be drunk while on duty,\u201d Kadadzera said.
