Former Chief Immigration Officer, Hudson Mankhwala, is now one of the key witnesses in a case in which former Minister of Home Affairs Uladi Mussa is among suspects who are answering charges of fraudulently issuing citizenships and passports to foreigners.
\nAnother suspect in the matter is former Chief Citizenship Officer, David Kwanjana.
\nMankhwala, who at first was jointly charged with Mussa, was on 30 May 2017 acquitted on charges of negligence and use of public office by the Lilongwe Magistrate\u2019s Court, after the state offered no evidence against him. .
\nOn Friday, Mankhwala spent much of his time analyzing documentation that was
\nbrought in court by State Prosecutor Kamudoni Nyasulu.
\nThe case was adjourned on Thursday as Mussa was reportedly attending relative\u2019s funeral.
\nMussa, and others were arrested last year on allegations that they fraudulently issued citizenships and passports to Burundians, Rwandans and Ugandan nationals, among other foreign nationals.
\nACB alleged that the accused took bribes from foreigners in exchange for Malawian passports.
\nA court document alleges that Mussa fraudulently granted citizenship documents to more than 50 foreigners in 2013 when he was Minister of Home Affairs.
\nMussa and Kwanjana were charged with neglect of official duty contrary to section 121 of the Penal Code and abuse of public office contrary to section 25B(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.
\nBoth suspects are denying the charges, with Mussa at one point having said they were crafted as a tool to silence him in politics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
