President Peter Mutharika has described the recent Afrobarometer survey which found that people of Thyolo do not trust him as fake and a result of vendetta.<\/p>\n
Findings by the Institute of Public Opinion and Research (IPOR) of the Afrobarometer showed that people of Mutharika\u2019s home district do not trust him.<\/p>\n
Addressing his first rally in the district since the research body released the findings, Mutharika said no matter what he does, the \u201cZomba based people\u201d [Chancellor College lecturers] will always oppose him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to say people of Thyolo voted for me up to 91 percent. Do all of us here know what 91 percent is? If it is a queue of ten people, it means nine people voted for me. Then I was very surprised to hear that people here do not love me and only 30 percent love me. But I knew that those people are liars. Did you see that person? He is tall, did you see him? Did he come here to ask you any questions? May be he went to beer hall where he found people drinking and asked them whether they like the President or not?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know they did not come. That is the group of Zomba based people, they opposed government during Bingu era and they also oppose me. So, it is a vendetta and I know that. No matter what I do, they are going to oppose. It doesn\u2019t matter what I do, they will oppose,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n
He also claimed, before the 2014 elections the same group of people said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) would not win the elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore the elections they said PP [Peoples Party] would<\/p>\n
get 44 percent, seconded by MCP [Malawi Congress Party] and the UDF [United Democratic Front] would be third and we were given an eight percent. They said we could not win but didn\u2019t the DPP win? Who is at Sanjika now? It is us! So, don\u2019t worry about that, we have to forget about it, such issues are just childish,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The President said the same people were accusing him of delaying the sale of Malawi Savings Bank but after the sale they are also accusing him of doing what they told him to do.<\/p>\n
Mutharika who said his government is inclusive took a swipe at people who accuse him of favouring people from Thyolo and surrounding districts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is somebody who is moving around saying my government is not inclusive, what do you mean it is not inclusive? Chief Justice and Director of ACB are from the Northern region. Inspector General of Police comes from Lilongwe while Chief Immigration Officer is from Nkhotakota and the Army Commander is from Zomba. Is there any nepotism there? But all the times you say Thyolo\u2026 Thyolo, what is wrong with the Thyolo nonsense?\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n
Thereafter, the President, who specifically mentioned PP Secretary General, said if some people continue attacking him they will remain in opposition.<\/p>\n
Mutharika who said he will be on the ballot in 2019 challenged that nobody can defeat him and the DPP in an election saying DPP is the only party and all other parties are just briefcase parties.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomebody gave me a recording of Tiuzeni Zoona <\/em>Programme and I have listened to it. In that programme the PP Secretary General attacked me saying I am Mtchona [someone who spent years outside the country] and he said all sorts of things to demean me. But we should be united to develop this country instead of opposing all the times.
