Times Group and the Malawi Electoral Commission Wednesday shared notes on how to manage the 2019 tripartite elections.
\nThe meeting took place at Times Group Head Office in Blantyre.
\nMec Commissioner, Reverend Clifford Baloyi, said the commission understands that the media have a key role to play in the management of the 2019 tripartite elections if they are to be conducted smoothly.
\nBaloyi said elections have, in the recent past been marred by voter apathy but he expressed hope that Times Group, being a giant media house reaching out to people through radio, television, print and online platforms can help the commission create awareness on the importance of voting.
\n\u201cRecently, fewer people have been voting. We are sensitising people on the importance of voting but we cannot reach out to everyone. That is why we are engaging Times [Group] to come in,\u201d he said.
\nBaloyi also said Mec and Times Group have agreed on the need to operate within the set media houses\u2019 Code of Conduct during the elections.
\n\u201cAn election is a very important event. It is, therefore, necessary for media houses to operate within the Code of Conduct so that the elections are conducted as smoothly as possible,\u201d he said.
\nIn his remarks, Times Group Chief Commercial Manager, Dumisani Ngulube, said the group has lined up plans for effective coverage of the elections.
\n\u201cWe are the biggest media house in the country. We will set on-air broadcasting studios in all the three administrative regions of the country for effective coverage of the elections.
