The Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) says the Olympic and Africa Day Celebrations event, which the country hosted in Lilongwe over the weekend, was a success.<\/p>\n
Moc president Oscar Kanjala disclosed during the celebrations at Civo Stadium that despite several hiccups, the committee was satisfied with the historical event.<\/p>\n
Five countries including Malawi took part in this year\u2019s event, which was also organised to celebrate the Africa Day.<\/p>\n
Athletes from Mozambique, South Africa and Lesotho failed to take part in the event.<\/p>\n

Chiumia said it was an honour that the country was chosen to host the event for the first time.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet me commend all the stakeholders, especially the organising committee for working tirelessly in organising the first ever Olympic and Africa Day Celebrations,\u201d said Chiumia.<\/p>\n
In the main event, Malawian athlete Ndacha Mchelenje from Mzuzu completed a 42-kilometre distance in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 38 seconds to claim gold while runner-up, Mike Tebulo finished the journey in 2 hours, 20 minutes and 24 seconds.<\/p>\n
Zambian Mathews Mutanya won bronze when he finished the distance in 2 hours, 22 minutes and 11 seconds.<\/p>\n
In the ladies category, Winile Mnisi from Swaziland won gold followed by Bhiri Tawapo and Mercy Kalunga both from Zambia.<\/p>\n
Mnisi finished the 42-kilometre race in 2 hours, 59 minutes, Tawapo, covered the distance in 3 hours while Kalunga completed the race in 3hours, 17 minutes and 28 seconds.<\/p>\n
In the 5000 metres women juniors, Malita Phiri won gold, while Zimbabwean Anna Bungu and Botho Marope of Botswana won silver and bronze respectively.<\/p>\n
Abina Chinga from Malawi, also won gold in the 5000 metres men juniors beating Hwenjere from Zimbabwe and Wilson Jume from Malawi.<\/p>\n
In the Paralympic 800 metres women category, Prisca Kachule won gold medal while Grace Kambiri finished second.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
