Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) debate on reading and writing, organised with funding from Hivos, attracted veteran writers such as Sam Mpasu, Dyson Gonthi and Alfred Msadala.
\nThe debate, which took place at Alendo Hotel in Blantyre on Saturday, saw writers making different contributions, with some of them challenging Mawu to embrace technology.
\nOthers felt Mawu needs to work up from its slumber and do more.
\nHowever, other writers felt it was the responsibility of every writer to help in building Mawu.
\nMawu President, Sambalikagwa Mvona, said they came up with the debate after noticing that there was a gap between authors, readers and even the government.
\n\u201cThe debate was all about hearing views from different people and mapping the way forward. For instance, for a long time authors and politicians have not been friendly,\u201d Mvona said.
\nHe said it was high time the government and other stakeholders partnered with them in the development of culture and education.
\n\u201cThrough this debate, we also wanted to hear from writers. The debate has been helpful and we commend Hivos for accepting our proposal,\u201d he said.
