{"id":58007,"date":"2017-12-24T06:28:35","date_gmt":"2017-12-24T04:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=58007"},"modified":"2017-12-24T06:28:35","modified_gmt":"2017-12-24T04:28:35","slug":"central-region-clubs-dominate-netball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/12\/24\/central-region-clubs-dominate-netball\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Region clubs dominate netball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in over two decades, Southern Region sides will finish the year without silverware.<br \/>\nAll major trophies have gone to Central Region teams, which have since warned that it is now their turn to dominate the netball scene.<br \/>\nLilongwe-based Blue Eagles Sisters, under the guidance of Sam Kanyenda, lifted the Presidential Netball Cup for the first time after dethroning holders, Kukoma Diamonds at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu.<br \/>\nDiamonds are from Blantyre.<br \/>\nYet another Lilongwe team, Civonets, under the tutelage of Whyte Mulilima, also stunned Diamonds to, for the first time, clinch the GOtv Netball Champions League at Don Bosco in Lilongwe.<br \/>\nEagles and Civonets\u2019 success reduced Diamonds to queen-makers whereas<br \/>\nother Southern Region sides, Tigresses and Thunder Queens, were left in envy.<br \/>\nKanyenda said Southern Region teams\u2019 honeymoon was over as the netball powerbase was shifting to Central Region.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have been knocking on the door for many years but we were unable to get a breakthrough. Now, it is our turn to dominate national events. We won\u2019t rest on our laurels,\u201d he said, attributing their success to the support of Malawi Police Service.<br \/>\nSimilarly, Mulilima said the Central Region teams had mastered the techniques of their Southern Region counterparts.<br \/>\n\u201cThis now gives us an advantage because the strategies we have put in<br \/>\nplace are working. We now have the confidence that we can win major titles at the expense of our rivals who had dominated national events for many years,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nDiamonds Assistant Coach, Noel Mussa, said the defeats were a wake-up call to his side.<br \/>\n\u201cOf course, some factors contributed to our failure in the national tournaments. Nevertheless, we have learnt our lessons. We will no longer get complacent,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nA former national team player, who declined to be mentioned, sympathised with Tigresses and Thunder Queens.<br \/>\n\u201cThese two sides do not have sponsorship. If the two were<br \/>\nwell-sponsored teams then the league in the South could have been<br \/>\ncompetitive. Diamonds\u2019 form has dwindled because they don\u2019t<br \/>\nget much opposition from Tigresses and Thunder who are in financial woes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in over two decades, Southern Region sides will finish the year without silverware.
