The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has launched an integrity programme for district councils to help stem widespread fraud and corruption in councils.<\/p>\n
ACB acting Director General, Reyneck Matemba, said Tuesday that district councils have a crucial role to curbing cases of corruption.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncils get a lot of financial support and resources that make them venture into corruption when they don\u2019t have the required integrity in safeguarding resources. So, this will help us work together in eradicating corruption as well as helping the councils know how they could report corruption cases to the bureau,\u201d Matemba said.<\/p>\n
Presiding over the launch on Monday in Salima, Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Kiswell Dakamau, said the programme would help district councils safeguard finances and resources that come to the council.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe programme we have launched today is very critical as you are all aware of the national decentralisation programme, which has increased the amount of resources going to councils and it is likely that this will make officers more prone to corruption,\u201d Dakamau said.<\/p>\n
He said participants who have been picked to be in integrity committees are supposed to make sure that resources that go to councils are well utilised.<\/p>\n
Ntchisi District Commissioner, Malango Botomani, was optimistic that the training would build council\u2019s capacity in fighting corruption.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe challenge we have been facing is that we, as councils, were not being included in implementation of corruption programmes but, now, we will be able to monitor all projects that are being implemented and make sure that they are successful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Implementation of the programme has started in the districts of Ntchisi, Salima, Nkhotakota and it will soon be extended to other districts with the aim of making sure that recourses are safeguarded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
