Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM), has pressed panic button in its quest to raise US$7,000 (about K3 million) to enable tennis star Chisomo Lumeta take up his scholarship in United States of America.<\/p>\n
Lumeta was offered scholarship to USA\u2019s Seminole State College in May following his outstanding performance in ITF\/CAT junior circuits and consistent form at High Performance Centre in Morocco.<\/p>\n
The youngster\u2019s scholarship covers for 70 percent while the remainder must be raised by the local association.<\/p>\n
LTAM general secretary, Christopher Kachale, said they were still discussing with stakeholders to bankroll Lumeta\u2019s scholarship.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are keeping our fingers crossed. Hopefully, we will get favourable response from stakeholders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kachale said in the meantime LTAM was looking for K1.5 million to allow Lumeta travel to the US and the other half must be paid in January.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe most important thing is that Lumeta should be in USA by mid-August. So we need about K3.5 million before he leaves and the other half we can pay in January,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Lumeta becomes the first Malawian tennis player to achieve the feat and his exploits are set to open window of opportunity for other players.<\/p>\n
Kachale said going to USA on tennis scholarship for a male athlete was a no mean achievement.<\/p>\n
He said it was life opportunity for Lumeta as he would take tennis as a career.<\/p>\n
In junior circles, Lumeta is rated 465 in the world and is among players earmarked to make it as a professional tennis player.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
