Zambia Super Division giants, Power Dynamos, have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign some Malawi under-20 national football team players, following their exploits at the Cosafa Junior Championship underway in Kitwe.
\nForwards Patrick Phiri and Peter Banda, midfielders Mike Mkwate, Chimwemwe Idana and left-back Precious Sambani are among the players Dynamos, plus other clubs such as Nkana Rangers, Zanaco and South Africa\u2019s Mamelodi Sundowns, have been monitoring through officials and scouts.
\nSo far, it is Dynamos that have reportedly put offers on the table for Phiri and Banda.
\nThe junior Flames\u2019 assistant Coach, Peter Mponda, on Monday reluctantly confirmed that he was holding talks with the Zambian side\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, Ricky Mwamfunda (Dynamos).
\n\u201cHe is coming this evening [for talks at Edinburg Hotel, where the team was based in Kitwe],\u201d Mponda said briefly, adding that Dynamos are also interested in Banda, who plays for Griffin Young Stars.
\nYoung Stars owner, Griffin Saenda Junior, was not readily available for a comment yesterday.
\nThe Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneugden, yesterday confirmed that top teams from Europe have inquired about some junior Flames\u2019 players.
\n\u201cI will have this confirmation in the next few days,\u201d Van Geneugden said in a brief response.
\nMwamfunda, who watched Banda and Phiri star for the junior Flames in Group A games against Swaziland, Zambia and Uganda at Arthur Davies Stadium, on Monday said he would comment on the matter upon meeting the team\u2019s coaching panel on Monday evening.
\nArthur Davies is Dynamos\u2019 base.
\nMwamfunda could not pick calls when called again yesterday.
\nDynamos, the six-time top flight Zambia league champions, made history after winning the Africa Cup Winners Cup, now called the Confederations Cup, in 2001.
\nReports also suggest that Sundowns are closing in on Idana and Mkwate.
\nIn each of the three Group A games, Malawi produced a man of the match in Idana, Phiri and Levison Maganizo.
\nOther scouts for Europeans clubs have also contacted the junior Flames\u2019 coaching panel over Banda, Mkwate and Phiri.
\nItalian scout Omar Sciola is among those hunting for talent at the ongoing championship.
