President Peter Mutharika has lauded the Peoples Republic of China for not interfering in Malawi\u2019s internal affairs in the decade of bilateral relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Malawi and China are this year celebrating 10 years of friendship which emerged after Malawi ended its relations with China\u2019s rival, Taiwan.<\/p>\n
Speaking during an audience with the visiting Chinese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Xiaodong, at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe yesterday, Mutharika said Malawi appreciates the contribution of the Chinese private sector to the country\u2019s.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do appreciate that you do not interfere with our domestic affairs. We also promise to respect your country,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Malawi leader revealed how the five government officials, including him, who were entrusted with the responsibility of drafting and signing the bilateral agreement with China, kept the deal a secret for three months between December 2007 and March 2008.<\/p>\n
Mutharika asked investors in water capacity building, singling out the raising of Kamuzu Dam for efficient supply of water to Lilongwe city residents to come forward.<\/p>\n
Xiaodong said the bilateral relations between China and Malawi have benefitted the people of the two countries and, moving forward, the countries would work together in enhancing their political mutual trust.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe shall never forget Malawians who contributed to the establishment of our relations,\u201d Xiaodong said.<\/p>\n
In the decade of relations, China has supported Malawi in infrastructure development and some of the projects are Parliament Building, Karonga-Chitipa Road, Malawi University of Science and Technology and Bingu National Stadium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
