It is sad that, instead of us working hard asking people to join us, they are busy denting [my image] using all means they can. I feel sorry because we should be preparing for elections and not internal fighting,” Chiumia said without mentioning names of people.

During a rally she conducted with other Cabinet ministers— namely Jappie Mhango and Goodall Gondwe— at Mpherembe in Mzimba last week, Chiumia was quoted as saying the current administration is not supporting the Electoral Reforms [Amendment] Bills.

“I might say Malawians misinterpreted my sentiments. What I meant is, it is my responsibility to outline the disadvantages of such reforms so that Malawians can properly make a decision after comparing the advantages which Pac and other stakeholders are preaching more on.

“I know that maybe when I was trying to simplify the meaning of such reforms at the rally, I might have gone astray. Therefore, if that is the case, it must not be taken officially,” Chiumia said.

Meanwhile, Chiumia has said she has written Pac to understand her sentiments in positive context arguing her ministry’s mandate is to civic educate people.

However, Pac spokesperson, Father Peter Mulomole, said the committee has not received the letter.

“We understand her point and we are fine with her. However, she must know that we have been called all sorts of names since we started serving Malawians through Pac,” Mulomule said.

Minister of Civic Education, Grace Chiumia, has accused some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members of fighting her in order to bring down her political career.
