Two days before the planned nation-wide protests organised by the Public Affairs Committee (Pac) against the government\u2019s delays to table the six Electoral Reforms [Amendment] Bills, government has said it is set to circulate the remaining three bills.<\/p>\n
Among the three to be circulated today afternoon are the contentious Constitution (Amendment) Bill, which wants a president to be elected by more than 50 percent of the valid votes cast through direct, universal and equal suffrage and, where such majority is not obtained by any presidential candidate in the first poll, a second poll \u00a0shall be held within 30 days with the only two candidates who obtained the highest and second highest number of valid vote cast.<\/p>\n
The others are Elections Management Fund Bill, and Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Governance Elections Bill.<\/p>\n
Leader of the House, Kondwani Nankhumwa, said yesterday that Cabinet had a meeting on Friday and approved the bills.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can confirm that we are circulating the bills on Monday [today] afternoon. When Cabinet met and discussed the three remaining bills, they were approved and, over the weekend, the government has been printing those bills and I can confirm that they are ready for circulation tomorrow [today] in the afternoon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Asked whether Pac is aware of the development, Pac Chairperson, Reverend Felix Chingoti, expressed ignorance on the development.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about this development. We will just wait for tomorrow and see what happens,\u201d Chingota said.<\/p>\n
Last week Thursday, the government circulated three out of the six Electoral Reforms [Amendment] Bills.<\/p>\n
The three circulated earlier on are Referendum Bill, the Electoral Commission (Amendment) Bill and Assumption of Office of President (Transitional Arrangements) Bill and The Electoral Commission (Amendment) Bill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
