{"id":57439,"date":"2017-12-11T09:06:22","date_gmt":"2017-12-11T07:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=57439"},"modified":"2017-12-11T09:06:22","modified_gmt":"2017-12-11T07:06:22","slug":"teargas-at-lebanon-us-embassy-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/12\/11\/teargas-at-lebanon-us-embassy-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Teargas at Lebanon US embassy protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There have been violent clashes near the US embassy in Lebanon, in the latest protest against president Donald Trump\u2019s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Security forces fired tear gas and water cannon to force back flag-waving protesters close to the embassy complex north of the capital, Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>Overnight, the Arab League condemned the US decision.<\/p>\n<p>It said the US could not be relied upon as a broker of Middle East peace.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters threw stones and set fires in the street close to the embassy in the Awkar district.<\/p>\n<p>Security forces had barricaded the main road leading to the large complex.<\/p>\n<p>Local media reported that some protesters had tried to break through the entrance to the compound, climbing barbed wire.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators, many wearing black and white scarves, chanted slogans denouncing Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon Communist Party leader, Hanna Gharib, told the protesters the US was \u201cthe enemy of Palestine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One group set an effigy of the US president alight.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon is home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees, including those who fled Israel after it was founded, and their descendants.<\/p>\n<p>In other developments, thousands of people demonstrated outside the US embassy in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, some waving banners reading \u201cPalestine is in our hearts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A burning object was thrown at a synagogue in the Swedish city of Gothenburg late on Saturday in what police said was a failed arson attempt. Jewish community leader Allan Stutzinsky said recent events had led to \u201chigher threats\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will be in Paris on Sunday for talks with president Emmanuel Macron, ahead of meetings with European Union foreign ministers on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>There have been three days of protests by Palestinians and their supporters since Trump\u2019s announcement, both in the region and in nations further afield.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has always regarded Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians claim East Jerusalem \u2013 occupied by Israel in the 1967 war \u2013 as the capital of a future Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has said his decision fulfills a campaign promise and that it is \u201cnothing more or less than a recognition of reality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Arab League resolution came overnight after hours of talks in Cairo.
