Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday led a united team of MCP heavyweights at a rally he addressed at Katoto Ground in Mzuzu.
\nBesides Chakwera, the MCP team comprised Vice President, Richard Msowoya, Secretary General Gustave Kaliwo and the party\u2019s new catch Sidik Mia.
\nChakwera said as the MCP continues to make remarkable strides on the political scene, such progress can only be sustained if people in the party live together in harmony and forgive each other of every wrong.
\n\u201cSome of the people you see me with today are those that have said much evil about me, they have done all sorts of things against me, but I have chosen to humble myself and forgive them just like God did with me. I was forgiven unconditionally and I have done likewise,\u201d Chakwera said.
\nHe then hinted that it is only a government that forgives and unites its people that would be able to lead its people to prosperity.
\nCommenting on national issues Chakwera reaffirmed his party\u2019s commitment to have the proposed electoral reforms bill deliberated upon and passed during the current sitting of Parliament.
\nHe said the proposed bills if enacted predetermine a good future for the country which is currently faced with huge economic and social challenges.
\n\u201cThey have started to bring some of the bills and they are promising to bring all of them, but we have demanded that they give us a synopsis of what they intend to do and give us more time to scrutinise them and make amendments where necessary. We will not accept this kind of tokenism that government is trying to do,\u201d Chakwera said.
\nHe said there is need for an extension for the current sitting of Parliament so that members of Parliament truthfully serve their constituents through deliberation of the bills.
\nTaking his turn Msowoya who is also Speaker of Parliament emphasized on the importance of constitutionalism in the party.
\nHe said if old and new members follow the party\u2019s constitution, there would be less tension and disagreements.
\n\u201cThere are certain people who simply don\u2019t like unity, they have no respect for leadership nor rule of law. But my appeal to all of us is to respect our constitution and the leaders that were chosen to lead us,\u201d Msowoya said.
\nThis comes at a time when there has been suspected bad blood between Msowoya and Mia who expressed interest for the party\u2019s vice presidency.
\nSpeaking on the sidelines of the rally, Mia said the current developments in the party have proved all skeptics wrong, who thought he had joined to cause confusion.
