{"id":57337,"date":"2017-12-08T06:36:32","date_gmt":"2017-12-08T04:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=57337"},"modified":"2017-12-08T06:36:33","modified_gmt":"2017-12-08T04:36:33","slug":"trumps-jerusalem-move-sparks-clashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/12\/08\/trumps-jerusalem-move-sparks-clashes\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Jerusalem move sparks clashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least 16 Palestinians have been wounded in clashes in the occupied West Bank, during protests against US president Donald Trump\u2019s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital.<br \/>\nReports suggest the injuries are mostly from tear gas and rubber bullets, but at least one was hurt by live fire.<br \/>\nIsrael has deployed hundreds of extra troops in the West Bank.<br \/>\nTrump\u2019s announcement \u2014met with worldwide dismay\u2014 reversed decades of US policy on the sensitive issue.<br \/>\nPalestinians in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have gone on strike and taken to the streets in protest.<br \/>\nMany of Washington\u2019s closest allies have said they disagree with the move, and both the United Nations Security Council and the Arab League will meet in the coming days to decide their response.<br \/>\nThere are fears the announcement could lead to a renewed outbreak of violence. The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has already called for a new intifada, or uprising.<br \/>\nThe US president said on Wednesday that he had \u201cdetermined it is time to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe said he was directing the US state department to begin preparations to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.<br \/>\nDespite warnings of regional unrest over any such move, the decision fulfils a campaign promise and appeals to Trump\u2019s right-wing base.<br \/>\nRecognising Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital was \u201cnothing more or less than a recognition of reality\u201d, he added. \u201cIt is also the right thing to do.\u201d<br \/>\nTrump said the US would support a two-state solution \u2013 shorthand for a final settlement that would see the creation of an independent Palestinian state within pre-1967 ceasefire lines in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, living peacefully alongside Israel \u2013 \u201cif agreed to by both sides\u201d.<br \/>\nThe president also refrained from using Israel\u2019s description of Jerusalem as its \u201ceternal and undivided capital\u201d.
