Archnishop of Lilongwe Diocese, Tarcisio Ziyaye, has suspended a meeting which parish priests in the diocese were expected to hold on December 13 to allow them to participate in the peaceful protests organised by the Public Affairs Committee (Pac) to force the government to table the six Electoral Reforms (Amendment) Bills
\nIn a circular, signed by the Archbishop Ziyaye yesterday, to all parish priests under the diocese, the archbishop urges the priests to notify members that the meeting, which was scheduled for the day of the protests, has been postponed.
\nThe archbishop\u2019s secretary, Francis Lekaleka, confirmed the development, saying it was meant to clarify the confusion on whether to attend the protests or the meeting.
\n\u201cThe march which has been organised by the Public Affairs Committee is of national interest; hence, the Archbishop thought it wise to suspend the meeting which was to be held on December 13, the same day of the protest, to allow members to participate.
\n\u201cThe circular also intends to emphasise that what is contained in the statement by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi is paramount; hence, needs to be followed,\u201d he said.
\nSeveral religious groups such as the Malawi Council of Churches, Nkhoma Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian and the Anglican Church released statements encouraging their members to participate in the protests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
