The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has said reasons Lilongwe City Mayor, Desmond Bikoko, is giving for dumping the party are not convincing.<\/p>\n
While saying that Bikoko has a right to associate with a political party of his choice, MCP Deputy Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka, said MCP supported him to be where he is today.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Mayor\u2019s reasons for dumping MCP are not adding up. He should mention the real reasons why he has jumped ship and joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). As a party, we are not against his leaving MCP because he has freedom of choice,\u201d Mkaka said.<\/p>\n
Bikoko was unveiled as a DPP member at a function which took place in Lilongwe on Sunday<\/p>\n
Mkaka said the party supported Bikoko, especially when he was campaigning for the position of the city mayor. He said even the party\u2019s president, Lazarus Chakwera, directly supported him to win the mayoral election.<\/p>\n
When announcing his defection, Bikoko said he felt that the council\u2019s projects would easily be carried out if he worked with the ruling party.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the Mayor of Lilongwe City, I understand that true patriots must join hands to achieve development. That is why I have decided to join DPP so that I can work hand in hand with the government towards a better Malawi,\u201d Bikoko said.<\/p>\n
Bikoko became Lilongwe City Mayor in January after defeating former deputy mayor, Akwame Bandawe. He replaced Willie Chapondera, a DPP member.<\/p>\n
Bikoko was unveiled as a DPP member alongside former Director of Public Prosecutions, Fahad Assani and Democratic People\u2019s Congress Secretary General, Smolet Kachere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
