{"id":56512,"date":"2017-11-21T09:54:19","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T07:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=56512"},"modified":"2017-11-21T09:54:19","modified_gmt":"2017-11-21T07:54:19","slug":"malawi-cashes-in-on-zimbabwe-turmoil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/11\/21\/malawi-cashes-in-on-zimbabwe-turmoil\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi cashes in on Zimbabwe turmoil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi\u2019s volleyball has cashed in on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/zanu-pf-fires-robert-mugabe\/\">the tense political climate in Zimbabwe<\/a> as organisers of the Zone VI Senior Volleyball Club Championships have withdrawn the event from Bulawayo in favour of Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe is going through political uncertainty amid calls\u2014from several sectors, including the army\u2014for the country\u2019s President, Robert Mugabe, to resign.<\/p>\n<p>The zone\u2019s Treasurer, Jappie Mhango, confirmed that Malawi had won the bid to host the tournament ahead of Botswana and Swaziland.<\/p>\n<p>Mhango said the competition, which is expected to have 35 teams from 10 southern African countries, will throw off on December 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe organising committee saw it fit to move the competition from Zimbabwe in order to allow the political climate there to stabilise. It would not have been prudent to proceed with the tournament in Bulawayo under the present circumstances,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Volleyball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, said he believes Malawi won the tournament\u2019s hosting rights because of her offer to accommodate beach volleyball besides the usual indoor games.<\/p>\n<p>Nkhoma said the championship will be held in Lilongwe with over 500 players and officials expected to come for the showpiece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also lobby to have a minimum of four teams representing us as hosts. Having the tournament played here in Malawi will help our teams to learn modern tactics and laws of the game. The foreign teams will also bring money to spend here and this will contribute to our economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nkhoma said a meeting, scheduled for Lilongwe, would determine the competition\u2019s budget, depending on available match venues.
