Gospel singer Princess Chitsulo of the \u2018Nyimbo Yanga\u2019 fame has taken to social media to hit at Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma), alleging that they were \u2018thieves\u2019 benefiting from artists\u2019 sweat.<\/p>\n
The singer, who recently postponed the launch of her Nyimbo Yanga <\/em>DVD because of piracy, said it was high time Cosoma had a competitor.<\/p>\n Her crying foul comes barely a month after the singer received a smaller amount of Airtel Malawi ringtone royalties which were distributed by the copyright body recently.<\/p>\n The Airtel Malawi ringtone for 2013-2015 saw Skeffa Chimoto dominating, after pocketing over K3.2 million with female gospel singer Favoured Martha second after getting over K2.8 million.<\/p>\n Chitsulo said she was not convinced with the way Cosoma handled the Airtel ringtone royalties where she said she only received K7, 000.<\/p>\n \u201cI have been trying to talk to them but they have not convinced me with their answers and, to make matters worse, they have been hailing insults on me.<\/p>\n \u201cI want money for the downloads. They can\u2019t tell me that since 2013 \u2018Nyimbo Yanga\u2019 only collected K7,000 this is an insult,\u201d Chitsulo said.<\/p>\n She said the whole collection she got was K49,000 for all the songs with K7,000 for \u2018Nyimbo Yanga\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s high time I, as a musician, stopped complaining about vendors and those who pirate my music in closed doors because I have discovered I just have the greatest enemy right in the house and that is Cosoma,\u201d she said on her Facebook page.<\/p>\n Chitsulo said, for some time, people from Cosoma have been hoodwinking them into believing that they were there to protect their products.<\/p>\n \u201cI have observed they do so [so] that they should benefit [sic] a lot from our talent which they have no idea how [sic] it hurts to come up with such products. They tell you my fans you should be buying CDs with a sticker because that is the original one, they want to benefit on [sic] our talent,\u201d Chitsulo said.<\/p>\n She said that things were not healthy on the ground, claiming that Cosoma has failed their job; hence, should never be trusted.<\/p>\n She went further to allege that Cosoma was the one frustrating artists in the country and not consumers.<\/p>\n \u201cThe only way Malawians can help us now is to make sure Cosoma, if it doesn\u2019t change, [sic] then we need to have a competitor,\u201d Chitsulo suggested.<\/p>\n The \u2018Sindilola\u2019 star said:<\/p>\n \u201cWe want change in Cosoma, if all fails; we will force things even if it means doing without protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n She has since indicated that she has returned the cheque which she collected and that she does not need anything.<\/p>\n Cosoma Executive Director, Dora Makwinja was not in the office on Tuesday to comment on the issue.<\/p>\n But the copyright body\u2019s senior licensing officer, Rosario Kamanga, said he was aware of the matter.<\/p>\n \u201cI am aware of the matter, it\u2019s got to do with distribution of the money from Airtel which has complete data in terms of use and which is what forms the basis of distribution,\u201d Kamanga said.<\/p>\n He said Chitsulo was of the view that she deserved to receive more.<\/p>\n \u201cThe issue was explained and she has been invited to the office to come and appreciate all this service,\u201d Kamanga said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President, Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, who is also Cosoma board member, said recently that he was aware of the issue and indicated it would be sorted out.<\/p>\n \u201cWe will look into the issue,\u201d Mhango said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Gospel singer Princess Chitsulo of the \u2018Nyimbo Yanga\u2019 fame has taken to social media to hit at Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma), alleging that they were \u2018thieves\u2019 benefiting from artists\u2019 sweat.
