{"id":56201,"date":"2017-11-15T09:55:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T07:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=56201"},"modified":"2017-11-15T09:55:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T07:55:04","slug":"malawi-shines-at-zimbabwe-tourney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/11\/15\/malawi-shines-at-zimbabwe-tourney\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi shines at Zimbabwe tourney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malawian athletes took the 2017 Korean Ambassador\u2019s Taekwondo Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, by storm with outstanding performances that won them two gold medals over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Phiri Junior shook off stiff competition from 16 contestants\u2014drawn from Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique and Botswana\u2014 to win gold in the men\u2019s -68 kilogrammeme category.<\/p>\n<p>Vester Banda also came out tops in the -57 kilogram women\u2019s event comprising eight competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Banda also received the best senior female fighter accolade and has returned home with a trophy besides the gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Head Coach, Lovemore Masinga, and athletes\u2019 representative, Typen Kamanga, also received silver medals for their team\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>Masinga said the athletes\u2019 performance is an indication of the strides that the sport is making in the country ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe struggled to raise resources to go there; so, we are more than happy to be returning home with all these accolades.
