People\u2019s Party (PP) has selected Nkhata Bay Central Member of Parliament (MP), Ralph Mhone, as the party\u2019s leader in Parliament replacing Salima South MP Uladi Mussa.
\nAccording to a list of office bearers of the 47th session of the National Assembly, Mhone will lead the party in the House deputised by Mzimba North MP Agness Nyalonje.
\nThe development follows Mussa\u2019s suspension from the party as vice-president for Central Region and acting president after he declared that he would contest as the party\u2019s presidential candidate in the 2019 tripartite elections.
\nAccording to Mussa, his decision was based on a careful analysis of the responses from the conversation he had with Joyce Banda, who is in self-exile, on her interest to contest in 2019.
\nPP spokesperson, Noah Chimpeni, said the party and the nation is optimistic from the new leader.
\n \u201cWe expect him to take our party interest to greater heights and carry on from what Mussa left and come in with some differences,\u201d he said
\nChimpeni, however, said the party is still in a process of selecting acting leader of the party in the absence of Banda.
\nMussa yesterday said he does not have any reservation with the change of the party\u2019s leadership in the Chamber.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t have any problem. I have been a leader and I led the party for three years in and outside the Parliament. That position does not require one to be vice-president or whatever, I am not concerned and I am not worried. I am eyeing the party\u2019s presidency,\u201d he said.
\nFrom government benches, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Cecilia Chazama, has been selected as deputy leader of the House, after leader of the House Kondwani Nankhumwa.
\nIn the 2017\/2018 budget meeting, Nankhumwa assumed the position without his deputy after the then minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, George Chaponda, was fired from his ministerial position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
