Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General, Lucas Kondowe, spends his last day in office Thursday following the expiry of his three-year contract in which he handled high-profile cases.<\/p>\n
Kondowe, who was appointed by President Peter Mutharika in October 2014, said Wednesday that he opted not to renew his contract because he has played his part.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I came to the ACB, it was a mission and I think I have done what I thought I could have done and it is time to move on. There is so much to be done but I think, for me, I have done the best I could,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
He said he is contented with his contribution to the nation despite the bureau facing financial challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf one wants to look at the achievements that I have registered during my tenure, they are clear for all reasonable-minded people to see,\u201d Kondowe said<\/p>\n
During his tenure, the graft-bursting body handled high-profile cases, including some Cashgate cases and the infamous case of the Zambia procurement deal.<\/p>\n
In the last months of his contract, he arrested former minister of Agriculture George Chaponda, who is answering corruption charges in relation to the procurement of maize from Zambia.<\/p>\n
However, ACB was being criticised by the public over its failure to prosecute cases involving Cabinet ministers as well as for being slow in investigating some cases.<\/p>\n
Under Kondowe, Issa Njauju, a senior ACB officer, was brutally murdered, which saw ACB staff living in fear.<\/p>\n
