National Women\u2019s Football Committee (NWFC) has said it needs about K12 million for the establishment of a new national team that is set to end the country\u2019s dormancy on the international scene.<\/p>\n
The committee\u2019s chairperson, Severia Chalira, said they were geared to end the three-year international exile by arranging a friendly match in August.<\/p>\n
The Malawi national women\u2019s football team last tasted action during the disastrous 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe committee is proposing a friendly match against either Tanzania or Zambia. We would like to have this friendly match in order to revive the team and prepare for future international competitions,\u201d Chalira said.<\/p>\n
NWFC has since sent a proposal to Football Association of Malawi (Fam) for funding amounting to K12 million in order to establish the new national team.<\/p>\n
Chalira said they were planning to camp from July 27 to August 14 before playing the friendly match on the weekend of August 15-16.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe venue of the friendly match would be determined based on the availability of funds. We will also liaise with Fam\u2019s technical subcommittee for the provision of a coach,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Fam\u2019s general secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, last month said the association would soon appoint a highly qualified coach for the women\u2019s national football team and provide funds to end the team\u2019s dormancy.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that we have coaches that have undergone the Caf A Licence Coaching Course, women\u2019s football and grassroots football will benefit from this. We are in the process of mobilising resources so that the national women\u2019s football team is active again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s football development in the country has stalled after the committee failed to source sponsorship for all the regional leagues.<\/p>\n
The leagues were abandoned last year after President Peter Mutharika did not renew sponsorship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
