{"id":54227,"date":"2017-09-27T14:27:19","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T12:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=54227"},"modified":"2017-09-27T14:27:21","modified_gmt":"2017-09-27T12:27:21","slug":"luanar-rebuffs-staff-on-20-salary-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/09\/27\/luanar-rebuffs-staff-on-20-salary-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"Luanar rebuffs staff on 20% salary hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>L<\/strong>ilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) management has said it is not going to give striking members of staff a 20 percent salary increment they are demanding.<\/p>\n<p>Luanar Vice Chancellor, George Kanyama-Phiri, told that the university\u2019s council is considering the staffs\u2019 concern but could not commit on the 20 percent salary hike<\/p>\n<p>Kanyama-Phiri, however, said he expects discussions with the striking members to end in the next three days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe met with council and we are still discussing the increment but it cannot be the 20 percent [which staff are demanding],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, staff at Luanar started a sit-in in bid to force the university management to effect the 20 percent salary hike which the staff claim was promised to them in May this year.<\/p>\n<p>Luanar Staff Union President, Francis Maguza-Tembo, said, as a union, they will only comment on their next course of action once they receive a formal written response from the management.<\/p>\n<p>The strike is likely to affect the university\u2019s academic calendar as the next semester is expected to start on October 23.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) management has said it is not going to give striking members of staff a 20 percent salary increment they are demanding.
